Episodes

Week 1: Malta

  • Original Air Date: 3 October 2018
  • Men's Team: Kayode (Project Manger), Alex, Daniel, David, Frank, Kurran, Rick, Tom
  • Women's Team: Jasmine (Project Manager), Camilla, Jackie, Khadija, Sabrina, Sarah, Sarah Ann, Sian
  • Task: Purchase a set list of nine items in Malta, negotiating for low prices. Least amount spent, after addition of fines, wins.[1]
  • Task Review: The men were reasonably thorough in their research, though failed to realize that the "Octopus" being asked for was a brand of diving equipment rather than a literal octopus, and also did not take into account that store owners on Malta traditionally take a siesta mid-day. By contrast, the women spent even more time researching, but Jasmine's indecisive leadership resulted in them taking much longer to get out and start buying. Critically, Kayode decided not to visit the island of Gozo, the only place where one of the items (a particular brand of salt) could be purchased, feeling that it would waste too much time; by contrast, Jasmine decided to take her sub-team over to the island, but a mix-up over the location of one of the stores they had researched resulted in them only buying the salt plus a set of blinds. However, the women's sub-team also bought a set of the same blinds, which they had originally been delegated to buy. Ultimately, the men failed to purchase two items, and had a further two disallowed (the octopus for not being what was asked for, and a particular brand of wine due to the team only buying two bottles instead of six). The women also had five of their items accepted, with a sixth being disallowed due to being purchased after the deadline, but their less effective negotiations, purchasing the duplicate blinds, and being late back to the airport all added up to consign them to defeat.
  • Result: The men spent €764.68, while the women spent €929.48.
  • Winner: The Men
  • Reward: Being served a meal of Maltese specialty dishes back at the candidate's house.
  • Brought into the boardroom: Jasmine, Jackie, and Sarah
  • Fired: Sarah, for her abrasive personality, disrupting the team's negotiations, and viciously attacking Jasmine in the loser's cafe and the final boardroom.
  • You're Fired Panel: TBA
  • Notes:
    • Unusually, the candidates were not asked to come up with team names in this episode, and were merely referred to as the "men's team" and "women's team".
    • Lord Sugar felt that the men's victory was not entirely deserved, and merely down to the fact that the women had made even bigger mistakes, which Frank admitted was correct back at the house. Several of the men were criticized for their performances; Kayode was accused of being over-talkative and dishonest by Karren, Rick came under fire for pushing for the team to purchase an actual octopus over the doubts of the other men, Alex was attacked by both Sugar and his own team-mates for getting a discount of only 1 cent on the two bottles of wine, and David was judged as the team's worst performer for not purchasing anything or otherwise contributing to the task.
    • After none of the women initially wanted to be the project manager, Jackie strongly pushed for Jasmine to take on the role, claiming her background made her suited to this task. She later came under significant criticism from Lord Sugar and Claude in the boardroom, for not purchasing anything herself, and for her overly-harsh criticisms of Jasmine's leadership. Sugar told her that she had only escaped firing because she at least confined her criticisms to Jasmine's decisions on the task instead of making the personal attacks on her, as Sarah did.
    • While she escaped being fired, Jasmine was strongly criticized for her ineffective leadership, the fact that her sub-team only bought one item, and caving into pressure from Jackie to be the project manager, with Lord Sugar telling her that she should not have agreed to take the role on if she did not feel comfortable doing so. However, Sugar did not feel that any of the other women would have done an especially better job.
    • Despite Karren defending Sarah as being the least at fault for the loss out of the three in the final boardroom, Lord Sugar decided that she had no potential as a business partner, due to her lack of respect for the project manager, and also for repeatedly claiming to have been mistreated because of her working-class background, which Sugar felt proved she could not take responsibility for her mistakes.
