Episodes

Week 1: Malta

  • Original Air Date: 3 October 2018
  • Men's Team: Kayode (Project Manger), Alex, Daniel, David, Frank, Kurran, Rick and Tom.
  • Women's Team: Jasmine (Project Manager), Camilla, Jackie, Khadija, Sabrina, Sarah, Sarah Ann and Sian.
  • Task: Purchase a set list of nine items in Malta, negotiating for low prices. Least amount spent, after addition of fines, wins.[1]
  • Task Review: The men were reasonably thorough in their research, though failed to realize that the "Octopus" being asked for was a brand of diving equipment rather than a literal octopus, and also did not take into account that store owners on Malta traditionally take a siesta mid-day. By contrast, the women spent even more time researching, but Jasmine's indecisive leadership resulted in them taking much longer to get out and start buying. Critically, Kayode decided not to visit the island of Gozo, the only place where one of the items (a particular brand of salt) could be purchased, feeling that it would waste too much time; by contrast, Jasmine decided to take her sub-team over to the island, but a mix-up over the location of one of the stores they had researched resulted in them only buying the salt plus a set of blinds. However, the women's sub-team also bought a set of the same blinds, which they had originally been delegated to buy. Ultimately, the men failed to purchase two items, and had a further two disallowed (the octopus for not being what was asked for, and a particular brand of wine due to the team only buying two bottles instead of six). The women also had five of their items accepted, with a sixth being disallowed due to being purchased after the deadline, but their less effective negotiations, purchasing the duplicate blinds, and being late back to the airport all added up to consign them to defeat.
  • Result: The men spent €764.68, while the women spent €929.48.
  • Winner: The Men
  • Reward: Being served a meal of Maltese specialty dishes back at the candidate's house.
  • Brought into the boardroom: Jasmine, Jackie, and Sarah
  • Fired: Sarah, for her abrasive personality, disrupting the team's negotiations, and viciously attacking Jasmine in the loser's cafe and the final boardroom.
  • You're Fired Panel: Matt Edmondson, Mo Gilligan, and Kavita Oberoi
  • Notes:
    • Unusually, the candidates were not asked to come up with team names in this episode, and were merely referred to as the "men's team" and "women's team".
    • Lord Sugar felt that the men's victory was not entirely deserved, and merely down to the fact that the women had made even bigger mistakes, which Frank admitted was correct back at the house. Several of the men were criticized for their performances; Kayode was accused of being over-talkative and dishonest by Karren, Rick came under fire for pushing for the team to purchase an actual octopus over the doubts of the other men, Alex was attacked by both Sugar and his own team-mates for getting a discount of only 1 cent on the two bottles of wine, and David was judged as the team's worst performer for not purchasing anything or otherwise contributing to the task.
    • Though he felt that the women's performance in general had been very poor, Lord Sugar had particular criticism for their purchasing two sets of blinds, saying that a sub-team purchasing a duplicate item was a mistake that had never been committed before. The nearest previous incident had been when Team Endeavour purchased two flags in series nine, but this was the result of the team initially giving incorrect specifications to the flag manufacturer and then being forced to order and purchase one in the correct dimensions.
    • After none of the women initially wanted to be the project manager, Jackie strongly pushed for Jasmine to take on the role, claiming her background made her suited to this task. She later came under significant criticism from Lord Sugar and Claude in the boardroom, for not purchasing anything herself, and for her overly-harsh criticisms of Jasmine's leadership. Sugar told her that she had only escaped firing because she at least confined her criticisms to Jasmine's decisions on the task instead of making the personal attacks on her, as Sarah did.
    • While she escaped being fired, Jasmine was strongly criticized for her ineffective leadership, the fact that her sub-team only bought one item, and caving into pressure from Jackie to be the project manager, with Lord Sugar telling her that she should not have agreed to take the role on if she did not feel comfortable doing so. However, Sugar did not feel that any of the other women would have done an especially better job.
    • Despite Karren defending Sarah as being the least at fault for the loss out of the three in the final boardroom, Lord Sugar decided that she had no potential as a business partner, due to her lack of respect for the project manager, and also for repeatedly claiming to have been mistreated because of her working-class background, which Sugar felt proved she could not take responsibility for her mistakes.
    • The You're Fired studio audience, by a small margin, disagreed with Lord Sugar's decision to fire Sarah. The panel were similarly split, with all agreeing that Sarah was not directly at fault for the loss, but that she may have come across as too forceful.

Week 2: Comics

  • Original Air Date: 10 October 2018
  • Men's Team: Frank (Project Manger), Alex, Daniel, David, Frank, Kayode, Kurran, Rick, Tom
  • Women's Team: Khadija (Project Manager), Camilla, Jackie, Jasmine, Sabrina, Sarah Ann, Sian
  • Task: Create a new comic book with an augmented reality cover targeted at 8-12 year-olds, and pitch it to three major retailers. Most orders, wins
  • Task Review: The men created a comic called Benji's Space Adventures, themed around a boy who travels to other planets via a magic telescope, while the women created an educational comic called M.C. Gogo, which primarily depicted the title character traveling to other countries and finding out more about new cultures. While Khadija's abrasive leadership style caused conflict with the other women, and the first issue of their comic came in for some criticism for being targeted at a younger age group than the specified target audience, the concept got near-unanimously positive feedback, and Jackie's bold attempt to persuade WHSmith, the largest of the three retailers to purchase copies for all of their stores paid off, resulting in substantial orders. By contrast, the men's comic was roundly panned as being cliched and unoriginal, and also criticized for the near-total lack of animation and poor narration in the augmented reality cover. David also made a major blunder in one pitch by bringing up negative comments that had been made by the focus group. The end result of all this was the two smaller retailers placing only minimal orders, and Kurran's disjointed pitch to WHSmith caused them to place no orders, ending any slim hope the men had of victory.
  • Result: The women got 14,500 orders, while the men got 950 orders.
  • Winner: The Women
  • Reward: Wall-climbing experience.
  • Brought into the boardroom: Frank, David, and Kurran
  • Fired: David, for being judged as the men's worst performer in both of the first two tasks, creating a dull and unoriginal story despite his claimed writing expertise, and for needlessly bringing up negative audience research in his pitch.
  • You're Fired Panel: Daliso Chaponda, Mike Soutar, Nina Wadia
  • Notes:
    • Despite the women criticizing Khadija's leadership as overly dictatorial, causing Lord Sugar to jokingly liken her to Kim Jong-un, Sugar complimented her for being decisive and giving her team a clear direction throughout, though he and Karren advised her to take the feedback from the rest of her team on-board more in the future. Jackie was credited as most deserving of credit for the victory due to her bold move to push for a major order from WHSmith, though the team would have still won decisively even without said order, with 4,500 sales to the men's 950.
    • Lord Sugar accused Frank of being a "diabolical" leader for coming up with an unoriginal concept and relying on the rest of the team to make all the decisions for him, but felt that the concept could have been salvaged and that David was more directly at fault for the poor execution of the comic. However, Frank earned Sugar's ire by repeatedly talking over him during his final deliberations, eventually causing Sugar to threaten to fire Frank on the spot if he interrupted again.
    • Kurran was likewise strongly criticized for his complete failure to earn any orders from WHSmith, and for his poor implementation of the comic's augmented reality feature, though was let off with a warning, with Lord Sugar deeming Frank at fault for accepting what Kurran himself described as a "first draft" of the augmented reality cover without asking for improvements.
    • Though David pointed out that his pitch to one of the smaller retailers had at least earned some orders, whereas Kurran's and Frank's sub-team got no orders, Lord Sugar felt that David's bringing up the negative feedback in his pitch was an unforgivable mistake that showed a total lack of business acumen, and was unswayed by David's argument that the retailers may have noticed said issues regardless.
    • The You're Fired studio audience were split evenly on David's firing, with Soutar being in full agreement with David's firing, but Chaponda and Wadia feeling that Kurran was more deserving of being fired.
